Huddersfield Town want their money back if they're to sell a former Lincoln City player this summer, according to journalist Alan Nixon. The 23-year-old has had a strange two years, going from one of the most exciting forwards in League One with us, to a big-money Huddersfield signing, to a player they appear willing to move on if the right offer lands. According to Alan Nixon, via Patreon, The Terriers would sanction a permanent exit, but only if they can recoup the fee they paid Luton Town in January 2025. That figure has been widely reported as being around £3 million, which isn't bad going for a young striker with 18 goals to his name last season. Taylor scored 11 times in 21 league matches for Wigan Athletic during the second half of last season, a return that has helped restore some of the shine lost during a mixed spell at Huddersfield. Back in March it was reported that Preston and Oxford were two clubs keeping tabs on him, while Wigan would also like to take him back, although the finances appear to make that difficult. Football Lowdown have suggested that Bristol City are among those looking at the striker, which is where the Lincoln interest becomes obvious. Michael Skubala has now moved to Ashton Gate, and Taylor's best football came under him at Sincil Bank, where he was used in a way that brought out the best in his pace, movement and instinct in the box. At Sincil Bank, Taylor scored ten goals in 19 appearances, including a hat-trick in the 5–0 win over Bristol Rovers. His sharp movement and clinical finishing made him a regular in the side during the run-in, earning both the EFL League One and EFL Young Player of the Month awards for March 2024. He finished the season as our leading scorer and one of the division's standout loanees. He was at his best running off defenders, attacking space and playing in a side that could spring forward quickly. That was what made him so dangerous for us in the second half of 2023/24, when his goals helped turn a good side into one that looked capable of breaking into the play-offs. Huddersfield, by contrast, never seemed to quite get the same tune out of him. He still scored goals, but not with the same consistency (although he did net against us in our last defeat at the Bank), and by January, he was allowed to leave on loan. Wigan then used him much more like Lincoln had done, and the goals returned. That is the dilemma for Huddersfield now. They have a player who may not be central to their plans, but who clearly still carries value because of what he has done away from their structure. If Championship clubs believe they can recreate the Lincoln or Wigan version of Taylor, then the fee may not look outrageous.
